Abang’s Story

Abang is a 5-year old KG2 student at the HOPE school in Gambella. The youngest child in her family, she was living with her mother, 3 sisters, and a brother. Due to the death of her father, the family was single-handedly supported by the mother, who struggled to support her family without a stable income. At times she even resorted to begging to feed her children. HOPE intervened with full care, providing a stipend to Abang’s family and full support for all school fees and supplies to attend HOPE school Gambella. Now, Abang excels at her academic performance. In addition to being a top student, Abang is also the class patron. She is the one who is usually given the task of overseeing the children when the teacher steps out of the classroom. This she does very efficiently, responsibility and confidence coming to her naturally. She is a favorite of the teachers both because of her personality as well as her maturity. Abang also enjoys the school because of her friends. “Fre is my best friend,” she says, “but I also have many others. That is why I like coming to school. This is where we all learn to read and write. We also get to play on the merry-go-round.” In the future, Abang hopes to become a teacher so she can teach all the other children who are not yet in school.
