The Ladders of HOPE strategy requires knowledge based involvement.
But it has sometimes been difficult to get qualified staff
locally due to "brain drain" and inadequate educational
system. To help us overcome this hurdle, HOPE has depended
on volunteers in a number of areas from time to time. HOPE
has engaged volunteers to teach English from preschool
to high school, provide instruction in our various vocational
programs, help in the office in areas such as fundraising
and public relations, and introduce relevant and appropriate
technologies (e.g. solar power) to our operations. Now with
the university college being formed, a number of volunteers
will also be needed in teaching and short term training.
One can volunteer for a short term lasting
from a week to three months or for a long term lasting from
a semester to two years. HOPE has a proper working setting
with well organized administrative system that can facilitate
productive and enjoyable work. In between, HOPE encourages
one to travel to our various operations to see our activities
and at the same time the diversity and beauty of our land.
HOPE likes volunteers to cover all their expenses. With
prior arrangement, HOPE can liaise in finding good living
accommodations close to the work site in Addis Ababa. In
some of our locations HOPE avails our guest house outside of
Addis Ababa, free of charge. We also welcome groups to come
and teach our children/youngsters. Young people from schools
and colleges are also welcome to do their internships or
study abroad requirements. Our experience with both individual
and group volunteers has been very useful as well as enjoyable.
Owing to this interface, our programs for the needy have
experienced ongoing freshness and vitality with our target
populations having an added advantage for all the attention
shown and the knowledge imparted.
